Subject: Chlorine flushing in the Donner Lake 18"water line.
On Tuesday, September 14th at approximately 11:00 a.m., the TDPUD water crew
began flushing chlorinated water through the Donner Lake water line to the TSD sewer
at approximately 100 gallons/minute. The previous week this water line had passed
both pressure and bacterial tests and was ready for the final flush. Inadvertently, a valve
on the 18"water line on the freeway crossing was left open. The flushing process back
fed the water back into the Truckee water system.
There was never any health hazard to the consumers. The Chlorine levels were never
beyond the safe drinking levels. The water contained chlorine within Department of
Health Service limits. The taste and odor in the water was a residual from the coating on
the interior of the pipe. This compound is AWWA, USEPA, NSF and DHS approved for
use in drinking water.
The District customer service department began receiving calls from concerned
customers around 2:45 p.m. Because there was no health concerns related to this water
quality problem, customer service was told to inform the consumers to flush their water
lines by opening hose bibs and running faucets.
District water crews are still flushing water lines today to eliminate any residual bad taste
or odor from the water.
