Why this matter is before the board
Surewest Broadband recently contacted staff, Peter and Alan, regarding the provision of broadband
services within the District's service area over a fiber optic system operated by the District. We have
scheduled a presentation by Surewest Broadband to the Board for your April 4 regular meeting.
History
Below is a brief description of SureWest Communications and its services.
With over 90 years in Northern California, SureWest and its family of companies represent an
integrated network of highly reliable advanced communications products and services.
SureWest provides digital cable TV, fiber optics, PCS wireless, DSL, high-speed Internet
access, data transport, local and long distance telephone service, and directories with the

• SureWest Communications is parent to the largest incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC)
headquartered in California, SureWest Telephone.
• SureWest has the largest number of fiber-to-the-home connections in the United States with
over 20,000 customers in the Sacramento/Roseville corridor.
• SureWest Telephone has one of the highest residential DSL penetration rates in the country
at over 30 percent.

SureWest Telephone is capable of providing DSL service to 100 percent of its service area.
The SureWest Communications Family
• SureWest Wireless provides digital wireless service in 16 counties and serves over 53,000
subscribers in and around Sacramento, Stockton, Yuba and Modesto. SureWest Wireless
features low cost unlimited wireless plans for individuals, families, students, a California
unlimited plan, and an unlimited nationwide calling plan. Some plans feature unlimited calling
to a local area code (916, 530 or 209).
• SureWest Broadband services include digital cable TV; high-speed Internet (DSL, T1/DS3,
Web Hosting); LAN, WAN and Structured Cabling Systems; and Custom Data Services for
consumers and businesses.
• SureWest Telephone serves over 131,000 access lines to homes and businesses, offering
advanced communications products and services within an 83 square-mile service territory.
