Wright, Interim General Manager/ Water Utility Director RECOMMENDATION: Approve the FY21 safety incentive award in the amount of $300 to each District employee provided no lost-time accident(s) was incurred in FY20. BACKGROUND: To promote the District’s safety culture, the Board historically has awarded a safety incentive to employees. From 2014-2017, the District rewarded those employees who did not have lost-time accident an incentive in the amount of $250 each year. In 2020, the District rewarded those employees who did not have lost-time accident in FY 2019 an incentive in the amount of $300. Since 2008, the District has had less than ten lost time accidents which is truly remarkable. The District’s commitment to safety as our number one Core Value, is dependent upon the safety culture amongst employees. Regular trainings, meetings, and review of incidents is part of the program to keep safe work practices a priority during the work day. The District’s goal and incentive program of no lost-time injuries has been effective for many years. In 2020, with the District’s over 134,000 work hours (average of 70 employees, working an average of 1920 hours FY20), there was only one lost time injury. Rewarding safe behavior and practices is an effective way of promoting and maintaining our successful safety culture. Staff is proposing to continue with the goal of no lost-time injuries or accidents and reward employees for reaching this goal. With the help of the District’s Safety Committee, the District is proposing that each employee that reaches this goal receive Page 2 of 2 a $300 incentive for FY20.
