Subject: Consideration to Purchase Replacement Thin Client PCs
1. WHY THIS MATTER IS BEFORE THE BOARD
Board authorization is required for expenditures in excess of $15,000.
2. HISTORY
The District has run Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) for 8 years. The technology
has provided valuable benefits to the District by reducing desktop maintenance by
over 90%, increased our security protection, and provided for mobility through the
pandemic we would not have otherwise had.
The VDI Infrastructure is made up of multiple components. In general, the destop
software sits within the server environment, while the access client or ThinPC sits at
the employees desk. The District has been running the same ThinPC hardware since
inception. The District has run out of spare ThinPC hardware, and we are no longer
able to purchase the same model. This will eventivally lead to staff's inability to
quickly replace hardware failures and will lead to desktops not being avaialable to
staff.
3. NEW INFORMATION
District staff has researched alernative hardware to replace the existing units. Based
on this research, staff has determined 10Zig to be the most benificial option for the
District.
In addition to the 10Zig ThinPC being "zero" clients, meaning they only run firmware
and are not subject to malware or viruses, the product also provides a central
management software to allow upgrades and support of the product from a remote
centralized location. This product will both increase the District's security and
decrease maintenance time necessary to maintain and monitor the VDI Infrastructure.
It provides both labor cost savings and reduces the District's risk to cyber attack.
The proposed 10Zig ThinPCequipment is quoted from CDWg, through the National
IPA Technology Solutions (NITS) contract, a government agency procurement vehicle,
for an amount of is $30,900.
Public agencies, including the District, are eligible to take advantage of State bids
through NITS. Section 3.08.060 of the District's code (Joint Purchasing with the State
of California and other public agencies) permits the District to take advantage of other
4. FISCAL IMPACT
Sufficient funds exist within the approved FY20 Electric General Fund for this project.
5. RECOMMENDATION
Authorize purchase with with CDWg for $30,900 for a total amount not to exceed
$33,990.
