Dear Mr. Walker:
Truckee residents will not soon forget the Christmas storms and power
outages of 1982. One of the worst storms in recent history swept into
the Truckee/Donner Lake area on Monday night, December 20th leaving
in its wake tens of thousands of dollars in damage to the Truckee Donner
Public Utility District's electrical distribution system while putting
90% of the PUD's customers in darkness. Some power was restored within
24 to 48 hours; however, many in the Donner Lake and Tahoe Donner areas,
as well as some other isolated pockets throughout the District, were left
without power for over a week.
Power poles and trees were snapped like matchsticks. Electric lines fell
under the weight of the snow ripping off crossarms and insulators. House-
hold services were torn from buildings. Live wires were down everywhere.
Damage was extensive and widespread.
Crews from the PUD aided by men and equipment from Harker & Harker electri-
cal firm out of Reno worked long and hard hours throughout the Christmas
weekend and into the following week.
District staff manned the telephones, collected information, and coordinated
work crews. Information, as sketchy as it was, was given to concerned
customers. Throughout the District as time went on, tension and frustration
mounted. Tempers grew short. District staff looked at the telephones and
hoped they would stop ringing. Yet, faced with this major emergency, the
TDPUD line crews and support personnel saw the challenge of the situation
and met it admirably_ Outdoor crews working in adverse weather conditions
and under dangerous circumstances put in long hours in an effort to restore

power to the largest numbers of people as rapidly as possible.
As President and on behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank
and commend each one of the PUD employees for their dedication to the
District and to the community of Truckee_
While the vast majority of the community accepted the situation as a fact
of mountain life and made the best of it, a few did not. Winter life in
Truckee is not easy. Granted, a week without power is not fun. However,
one cannot expect to move here from Sacramento, the Bay Area, Los Angeles
or any other mild climate and expect the lifestyle to be the same. Household
contingencies should be made.
Do you have enough food in your home to last a few weeks, should you be
snowed in?
Do you have candles, flashlights, batteries and lanterns in case of power
failure?
Do you have auxiliary heat and cooking in case of power outages if you
live in an all electric home?
Is your home winterized and are you prepared for that blizzard?
Does your car have at least a half-tank of gasoline, should a power
failure close local gas stations?
Can we all say that we are really prepared for the next storm?
I, for one, have re-examined and augmented my own household contingencies.
Will you?
