HomeMy WebLinkAbout12 Water Wise Demonstration Garden Agenda Item # 12 TRUCKEE E Public Utility District WORKSHOP To: Board of Directors From: Steven Poncelet Date: July 01, 2009 Subject: Update on the TDPUD Water Wise Demonstration Garden 1. WHY THIS MATTER IS BEFORE THE BOARD This workshop item is a review of the draft design and bid specifications of the TDPUD Water Wise Demonstration Garden. 2. HISTORY Landscaping and irrigation water use are becoming increasingly important as the District moves from a flat water rate to a new rate structure where customers pay for the water that they use. The impact on irrigation use on water bills has been discussed often during the Water Meter Project and during the water rate workshops. To help customers manage their irrigation water use, and to provide 'water-wise' alternatives, the District in FY08 began the TDPUD Water Wise Demonstration Garden project. This garden, located at the District's main office, will include a lawn replacement with a bunch grass/dry stream bed design, native and drought tolerant vegetation, and water-efficient irrigation. The project include informational signage on- site and the full garden design, plant lists, and where to source these items will be posted on the TDPUD website. 3. NEW INFORMATION The preliminary design of the demonstration garden and the information required to procure the plants, materials, irrigation equipment, and installation of the garden is complete and attached for review and comment. The attached information includes: Sheet 1 shows a site reference which defines the four areas of the garden (Areas 1, 2, 3, & 4); Sheet 2 is a Demolition Plan to be completed prior to the installation of the garden; Sheets 3, 4, & 5 are the Planting Plans and a Plant List is also attached; Sheets 6, 7, & 8 are the Hardscape and Grading Plans; Sheet 9 is the Irrigation Plan and we do plan to include a smart water controller in this project; and Sheet 10 is the Planting Details. Not included in this package is the detailed material lists (other than the plant lists) and the full installation specifications which will be finalized after Board feedback and direction. The current plan is for the District to procure the plants, materials, and irrigation equipment as per our purchasing requirements. The installation of the garden will go through a public works bid process and is anticipated to be brought to the Board for approval at the regularly scheduled August 5th Board meeting. 4. FISCAL IMPACT Sufficient funds existing within the approved FY09 budget for this project. There is no fiscal impact associated with this workshop item. 5. RECOMMENDATION Receive this report and provide comments and direction. Steven Poncelet Michael D.
