TRUCKEE .O
WORKSHOP
To: Board of Directors
From: Steven Poncelet
Date: April 07, 2010
Subject: Update on the "Trashion Show" Assemblies and the Green
Challenge
1. WHY THIS MATTER IS BEFORE THE BOARD
The Board plays a critical role in the success of the District's conservation programs
by providing feedback on existing programs and direction for future programs.
2. HISTORY
Staff presented a workshop on the FY10 conservation programs at the February 3,
2010 Board meeting which included two important new programs for the District: 2010
Green Schools and Truckee Green Challenge. The Green Schools program is a
collaborative effort between the District, Tahoe Truckee Unified School District
(TTUSD), and the Sierra Watershed Education Partnership/Truckee High School
Envirolution Club to hand out a free conservation kit to almost 1,800 children and
TTUSD staff who live in the District. This program also has a significant education
component including promotion of the many District programs to save energy/water
and save money. The Truckee Green Challenge is a collaborative effort between the
District and the Sierra Sun and is a web-based conservation competition with prizes
for business, residences, and schools (elementary, middle, and high-school).
3. NEW INFORMATION
The main vehicle in the Green Schools program for distribution of the conservation
kits and for educating the community about our conservation programs was a series of
Trashion Show general assembly's at Donner Trails, Glenshire Elementary, Truckee
Elementary, and Alder Creek Middle School. At each of these events, attended by all
students and staff, the Truckee High School Envirolution Club members modeled self-
created fashion made out of trash and recycled materials. Each costume and skit
included an environmental message and integrated into the skits was a description of
the conservation measures included in the District conservation kits and an invitation
to participate in the Truckee Green Challenge. The members of the Truckee High
School Envirolution Club delivered the message with great innovation and courage.
They should be commended for their leadership and willingness to champion the
message of the District to `save energy/water and save money'.
The Trashion Shows are all complete and the response has been overwhelmingly
positive from the children, school staff, and the parents who have spent hours with
their children installing the many energy and water savings measures provided in the
conservation kits. The Conservation Department has received calls and a-mails
praising the program and has heard from numerous staff members who have been
approached by District customers about the program. The Sierra Sun has run a front-
page article covering the Trashion Shows titled `It's in the bag' which recognizes the
students achievements and documenting the impact of the District's conservation kits.
The response from TTUSD administration and staff has been equally positive. Most
important, this program distributed almost 20,000 CFL's, over 3,000 LED night lights,
and thousands of other energy and water savings measures in a short period with very
low costs and significant impact. The value of high school student leaders educating
their younger peers cannot be measured.
4. FISCAL IMPACT
Funding for the Green Schools program and the Truckee Green Challenge are
included in the FY10 budget. There is no direct fiscal impact associated with this
workshop item.
5. RECOMMENDATION
Receive this report and provide comment and direction. Consider directing staff to
bring back to the Board a resolution commending the members of the Truckee High
School Envirolution Club for their leadership in educating our community on the
benefits of conservation and striving for a sustainable future.
