Date: June 16, 2010
Subject: Discussion About the Upcoming Patricia S. Sutton Conservation
Garden Opening and Dedication
1. WHY THIS MATTER IS BEFORE THE BOARD
This matter is before the Board as the Patricia S. Sutton Conservation Garden
opening and dedication is an important step in the District's water conservation efforts
and the Board will be dedicating the garden to Pat Sutton for her service to the District
and Truckee Community.
2. HISTORY
The District has developed the water-wise demonstration garden as a key tool in our
water conservation efforts. The timing of the garden, and associated information,
coincides with the roll-out of the District's water meter project. Landscape irrigation is
a key driver of high water use in our community and the garden is designed to
showcase various options to have beautiful landscaping and save water.
At the February 17th District Board meeting, the Board adopted a resolution to name
the garden the Patricia S. Sutton Conservation Garden to honor Pat Sutton's
extensive service to the District and our Truckee community.
3. NEW INFORMATION
The District is planning a garden opening and dedication event on Wednesday, July
14th from 5:00-7:OOPM to launch the new garden and the new TDPUD web-based
resource. This event will also be used to dedicate the Garden to Pat Sutton. A
comprehensive marketing and outreach plan is being developed to promote the event
and the garden. This effort will include press releases, inviting the local media, inviting
key community stakeholders, local advertising, a bill stuffer, and other outreach efforts
(see attached bill stuffer). A new conservation web-page is being developed which will
have all of the garden plans, plant lists, and material lists along with water-wise
gardening information and links to our suppliers. Staff is also working on the event
planning which will include a large tent, tables/chairs, and catered food/refreshments.
The event will be open to all TDPUD customers and friends.
For the dedication ceremony, Robert Sutton has been contacted to confirm the date
and we are working with him to invite the appropriate family members and friends.
4. FISCAL IMPACT
Sufficient funds exist with the budget for this event.
5. RECOMMENDATION
Receive this report and provide feedback.
